They actively involved people in decision making on a day to day basis. Where necessary authorised Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards were in place and these were being managed appropriately. Our Gosforth care home is a three-storey building purpose built to provide residential care to 37 residents. The home is surrounded by well-maintained mature gardens which provide peaceful outdoor areas for everyday enjoyment. We are a respected, trusted, well established Christian charity founded in 1950, to provide residential care for older people based on Christian principals and values according to our statement of faith. We welcome residents and staff from any denomination who would like to come live or work with us.
People told us they were very well cared for and we saw warm and compassionate relationships between people and staff. Staff treated people with respect and were very aware of maintaining people’s dignity at all times. Staff clearly knew people well and were able to respond appropriately to any requests for support and interaction. We saw they had received regular supervision and an annual appraisal. New members of staff completed an induction period and attended a probation meeting to review their performance after they had been in post for three months. Staff received competency based training from the pharmacy as well as from the provider.

The chief executive told us they were in the process of updating everyone’s DBS checks. We found that people who used the service were protected and safe. We found that there was an effective infection control system in place and that the home had a clean and suitable environment. Where people had specific needs in relation to diet, appropriate professionals were involved such as dietitians or the speech and language therapy team. This included a formal interview process and a ‘meet and greet’ were interaction with people was observed. References and Disclosure and Barring Service checks were completed before people were offered employment.
People were involved in their annual reviews, as were their relatives. This was an opportunity to review all aspects of the person’s life such as relationships, socialisation and interaction as well as the care they received. Staff had a good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards . We observed staff seeking people’s consent before they were supported.
